Individual Therapy

Individual counseling is counseling with one counselor/therapist and one client. In this form of counseling the client is encouraged to explore their feelings, thoughts, beliefs, and behaviors. Clients are provided with a safe and confidential environment to work through challenging memories, identify areas of their lives that they would like to change, have a better understanding of themselves and others, set personal goals, and work toward desired change. Individual counseling can last from 8-12 sessions (short term) or 6 months - several years (long term).

Play Therapy

Elizabeth is a Registered Play Therapist. Play therapy utilizes play, a person’s first form of communication, to help them express their feelings more easily through toys instead of words. Children, adolescents, and sometimes adults, do not have the words or the ability to talk about how they feel, what is going on in their lives, or their struggle but they can show a trained play therapist through play, expressive arts, and sand tray.

“You can learn more about a person in one hour of play than in a year of conversation.” – Plato

Association for Play Therapy (APT) defines play therapy as "the systematic use of a theoretical model to establish an interpersonal process wherein trained play therapists use the therapeutic powers of play to help clients prevent or resolve psychosocial difficulties and achieve optimal growth and development." EMDR Therapy

Elizabeth is trained in EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing). EMDR therapy is founded on the basis that our emotional well-being is connected with our physical (somatic) state. During a painful or traumatic event our brain processes and stores memories incorrectly. Because of this, the painful, past memories feel like they are happening in the present. EMDR therapy corrects this mis-storage, using a body-based technique called bilateral stimulation (using eye movements, tones, or taps), so that the painful memories associated with the trauma lose their charge. The painful memory is not gone; rather, it is reprocessed correctly to that it does not feel like it is happening in the present. Learn more about EMDR here.
